Empress was born from a 4 month trip through the small nation of Malawi, Hal aka Selkie (Hold Tight Records & Raider Records) uncovered the thriving sounds of Mzuzu, a rainforest city
in the heart of the country. Over a 2 week period, the vocals were recorded and mixed at Vic Greenyok’s, a local studio in the depths of the city. Forward a few months and back in Bristol, Sam ‘Chip’ Heulin added guitar over the track, and with the help of Juan Sevilla and Joe Baker (aka Kreed), the track was Mixed and Mastered.
East African syncopated guitar and vocals meet the synonymous 808’s of Bristol’s renowned bass movement. This track sits somewhere slap bang in the middle of Philli South inspired Trap, and the warm, joyful sounds of East African Benga and Highlife Music. Nesta Kazembe and Bobo Andy, both living and working in Mzuzu, lay down a heartfelt vocal of love and admiration for their love’s, their very own Empresses.
